From Africa to Aotearoa, Falling in love with the Heart and Soul of the Pacific Islands

Leaving East Africa and arriving in New Zealand, I had only a faint idea of the vibrant Pacific Island cultures that thrive here. But as I began connecting with people from across the Pacific (Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia), my eyes opened to a whole new world (mainly thanks to tiktok). Each interaction has been a gift, revealing the depth of their traditions, the beauty of their stories, and the kindness that seems woven into every part of their lives.

I’ve been humbled by the unwavering warmth and generosity shared by the people I’ve met. Whether it’s through shared meals, laughter, or stories passed down through generations, every moment has been a reminder of the power of community and the richness of cultural heritage.

Being embraced by this welcoming community is an honor, and I feel incredibly lucky to be part of something so deeply rooted yet open-hearted. Here’s to celebrating and learning more from the people and cultures who make this place so special.
