Weekend Getaway to Raglan: Surf and Serenity

The reason for this weekend getaway was to escape the hustle of Hamilton and set my sights on a charming coastal town named Raglan, nestled in the heart of the Waikato region, only 47 kilometers from home. The drive was not too long, about an hour, but it wasn’t exactly dull either. The roads, typical of New Zealand, did their usual dance up and down slopes, interspersed with a number of sharp corners that kept me alert, adding a touch of adventure into the trip.

As I arrived in Raglan, the town welcomed me with stillness and silence, one of those weekends when everybody was enjoying their home comforts, leaving the streets dead and serene. After a quick drive around the town, I went directly to the highlight of my trip-the beach.

Raglan is renowned for being one of the best-surfing destinations in the country, and I immediately knew why: the beach was alive with surfers catching waves, their boards flying through the water with ease. I parked on the hilltop over the beach, the deep slope down to the shoreline giving it a great view of crashing waves. I love the instant sound of the sea, and it is a sound that I have missed so much. Straight away, I changed and headed towards the water.

Refreshing and thrilling swimming in Raglan. The waves can get well high, fun it is to ride, and they can also catch you when not paying attention. I couldn’t help myself but carefully weigh caution against curiosity as I watched teens paddling fearlessly on their surfboards, venturing into the deeper waters to train.

After a good part of the day at the beach, it was time to go home. On the return way, we passed by Morrinsville, which is a small farming town. One does not really miss it because it has a huge statue of a cow. This iconic piece of art stands to remember the rich agricultural heritage of this region, with fields and farms continuing as far as the eye can see. The peaceful pastoral landscape was a beautiful contrast to the wild energy of the coast.

If you are around Hamilton or greater Waikato and thinking about what things you can do, then here are a few ideas to make the most of your weekend:
